How The Diversity Visa Lottery Program Works

Each year, 50,000 immigrant visas are made available through a lottery to people who come from countries with low rates of immigration to the United States. The selection is made from the valid entries received by the State Department through the electronic form on the State department website www.dvlottery.state.gov

Anyone who is selected under this Diversity Visa lottery or American green card lottery will be given the opportunity to apply for permanent residence. If permanent residence is granted, then the individual will be authorized to live and work permanently in the United States. If you are such a winner, you will also be allowed to bring your spouse and any unmarried children under the age of 21 to the United States.

Though only 50,000 visas are granted every year more than that number, around 100,000, are selected. The reason for this is that some of the first 50,000 persons who are selected may not be qualified for the visa or will choose to complete the processing. There can be several reasons for failing to qualify for a visa such as the failure to produce the valid documents or failure to meet other requirements as per the American law.

So the larger number of selection ensures that at least 50,000 people do get the visa in a particular year. But this means that not all who were selected would get a visa. Such people can apply again to enter the American green card lottery as their previous selection is held over.

How Much Does the Lottery Cost?
There is no fee for entering the diversity visa lottery. If you win, you must pay a fee for an immigrant visa and a separate visa lottery surcharge. But these payments are to be made to the visa issuing authorities and not to anybody else.

How Do You Find Out If You Won?
Only the winners will be notified by mail at the addresses listed on their applications. Winners will be sent instructions and information on fees. So if you get such a letter from the State Department be ready to act promptly on the instructions because failure to do so can lose your chance of getting a visa.

Another thing to note is that the State Department doesn’t send emails to the winners so if you receive such an email it could be someone trying to scam you.
